These sisal weave dark checkered baskets by The Basket Room are the perfect contemporary but eco savvy choice for storage in your home. Coming in three different sizes, they can be used all over the home and office - for veggies or utensils in the kitchen, desk tidies or toy storage through to large planters and blanket baskets.

Made using sisal, the craftswomen who produce these check woven baskets all learned to weave from a young age, and practise this traditional African craft within a small collective in rural Kenya. The Basket Room team visit and spend time with this talented group as often as they can, and have fostered a strong bond with the craftswomen over the years. Before they started trading with this group, the weavers would make the long journey to Nairobi to sell their woven baskets at urban markets. These days, women can work safely and more efficiently from home, working to complete large and regular orders from The Basket Room. 

The Basket room is an ethical brand founded by Camilla and Holly, who met at fashion school back in 2014. They work with artisans and weaving co-operatives in East Africa to produce hand-made vessels which are perfect for storage or holding plants. 

When it comes to materials, they are meticulous, choosing raw organic plant fibres that are non-water and non-pesticide intensive. They use fibres local to where the baskets will be woven when possible, keeping emissions down and further boosting local economies. The natural range of baskets we have are either kept in their fibres hue or coloured using traditional plant dyeing techniques passed down through generations.
